What is PSG’s plan to replace Mbappe?
Mbappe replacement: The 24-year-old is one of the best players in the world, a completely unique footballer. There is no equivalent talent, or archetype of player. And if there was, he certainly wouldn’t be for sale, no matter how deep PSG’s pockets are.
But there are some elements of Mbappe to be found in a handful of players around Europe. If he does leave, the French club will need a top-class goalscorer, who is capable of working in new manager Luis Enrique’s possession-heavy style. Fortunately, there are a few potential replacements that could fill the void left by Mbappe. One such player is Erling Haaland, who has emerged as one of the hottest properties in European football. Another option is Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, who has already proven his value in the Bundesliga. Their next striker will ideally be young, a player already among Europe’s best but who can still be developed further. He should also, preferably, be French.
That narrows the list considerably but there are still a few options that meet some of the aforementioned criteria. This summer’s market is an interesting one, there are a number of talented No.9s between the ages of 22-25 that are expected to be available, but all of them have price tags near €100 million (£86m/$110m), and their current clubs wouldn’t necessarily be in any great rush to get rid of them.

Still, it is widely assumed that the departure of one could lead to a domino effect of sorts. And, ironically, PSG could start the firesale. The Parisians have reached an impasse with Mbappe, who looks likely to leave sometime in the next six weeks. With the player in open revolt against the club and its owner — and pre-season yet to start — a move in the near future makes sense.
And once he’s gone, the pieces across Europe will likely shift. So, which striker will PSG likely buy to cope with Mbappe’s departure? GOAL takes a look at their best options…
7. Neymar
If PSG were to be compelled to part ways with Mbappe, their failure in the transfer market would be perceived as monumental if they fail to secure a proficient goal-scorer as a Mbappe replacement. However, in the event that their pursuit of a new signing proves challenging, the newly appointed manager, Luis Enrique, could make adjustments to the team’s lineup by positioning Neymar in a more advanced role. Although this could potentially diminish some of the 31-year-old Brazilian’s creative contributions, he has consistently demonstrated his ability to find the back of the net without difficulty.
In fact, if PSG faces stiff competition in their attempts to acquire their primary targets and deems other available options too expensive, Neymar could easily tally 20 goals in Ligue 1. It is important to note, though, that Neymar may not be receptive to such a role, although the final decision may not be solely up to him. Consider this option as a last resort, then.
6. Romelu Lukaku
The future of the Belgian striker remains uncertain. While Lukaku is technically still a Chelsea player, it appears likely that his time with the club will come to an end soon. Inter Milan has expressed interest in bringing him back to Milan, and Lukaku seems more than willing to make that move. However, Chelsea has rejected an outright bid of €30m (£26m/$33m) from the Champions League finalists, as they are seeking a higher fee.
PSG is in search of a more traditional striker and has previously shown some interest in Lukaku, although they never made a formal offer for his services. Admittedly, this may not be a perfect fit as Lukaku is not as mobile as the other options PSG is reportedly prioritizing, and concerns persist about his performance in big games. However, in the current expensive striker market, it is rare to find discounts for No.9s who can consistently deliver 15 or more goals per season. Although Chelsea’s asking price of €40m (£47/$50m) may seem relatively affordable in today’s market, this move would make sense, even if it is only on a short-term basis.
5. Harry Kane
It is evident that Tottenham is determined to keep Kane and does not want to sell him. However, the England captain has yet to indicate his willingness to sign a contract extension beyond the 2023-24 season, leading to a stalemate between the two parties. Allowing their best player and most valuable asset to depart for free would be illogical. Kane possesses exceptional talent that can significantly impact games, making him crucial for Spurs’ prospects of competing in European football next season.
Although Bayern Munich has expressed interest, their previous bids fell significantly short of Tottenham’s valuation for the player, creating an opportunity for PSG. Tottenham is unlikely to sell Kane to a Premier League rival, and while their stance regarding European sides remains uncertain, the pool of potential suitors appears limited. Real Madrid has a strong desire to acquire Mbappe, leaving Barcelona with no pressing need for another striker. Borussia Dortmund may lack the financial means to secure Kane, and it is unlikely that an Italian club will mount a serious pursuit.
PSG, with their need for a striker, particularly one with creative abilities and a knack for goal-scoring, possesses the financial resources to make the deal happen. Kane could very well be the ideal candidate to fulfill their requirements.
4. Rasmus Hojlund
This potential move could be devastating for Manchester United supporters. Reports suggest that the Red Devils have expressed interest in signing the Danish international, but they may find themselves priced out of the deal, particularly if PSG is willing to meet Atalanta’s rumored €100 million (£85m/$110m) valuation for the striker.
Moreover, there is a tactical compatibility at play. Hojlund possesses strength and speed, and his finishing ability continues to improve. While his nine Serie A goals may not seem remarkable, it’s important to note that the Danish international did not always benefit from consistent service. With increased opportunities, his goal-scoring tally is expected to rise. Supported by players like Neymar and Marco Asensio, he should receive plentiful chances to find the back of the net.
Although his relative lack of experience raises some concerns—Hojlund won’t turn 21 until February 2024—this signing represents an investment for both the present and the future. There is potential for Hojlund to develop into a top-tier European striker in the years to come, making him a worthwhile gamble for any club.
3. Goncalo Ramos
PSG’s potential interest in Ramos has been sporadically reported for a few months, with sporting advisor Luis Campos allegedly being a fan for nearly a year, as per French Football News. This connection appears logical considering Ramos’ impressive goal-scoring record, having netted 19 times for Benfica in the Portuguese top flight and an additional seven goals in the Champions League. Furthermore, his notable performances in the World Cup for Portugal further indicate that the 22-year-old is prepared for the grand stage.
Benfica has proven to be astute sellers in recent times. They obtained an initial fee of €75m (£64m/$81m) from Liverpool for Darwin Nunez last summer, suggesting they could demand an even higher price for Ramos. The inflated transfer fees commanded by top players this summer further bolster Benfica’s bargaining position. Additionally, the existing strong working relationship between Campos and Jorge Mendes, Ramos’ agent, adds to the plausibility of a potential deal. While not the primary option, it would not come as a surprise to witness Ramos donning the Parc des Princes jersey in the near future.
2. Victor Osimhen
A few months ago, Osimhen expressed his desire to play in the Premier League at some point. However, his aspirations may need to be postponed, as Manchester United seems hesitant to make a significant investment in a single player.
That’s where PSG comes into the picture. The Parisian club has no reservations about splurging on transfers, and Osimhen stands out as one of the best pure No.9 strikers in Europe, excluding Haaland. What’s more, he continues to improve. Osimhen has consistently increased his goal tally over the past three seasons, concluding the 2022-23 campaign with an impressive 31 goals in all competitions. His playing style is distinctive as well. The Nigerian international possesses relentless directness, excels in aerial duels, and is deadly when making runs behind the defense. Additionally, he has been enhancing his passing abilities and should have no trouble adapting to the possession-based football likely to be employed by Luis Enrique. While the priority target for PSG is currently someone else, Osimhen would serve as a formidable backup option.
1. Randal Kolo Muani
For some time now, it has been widely known that PSG has set their sights on Kolo Muani, seeing him as a potential strike partner to secure Mbappe’s long-term commitment to the club.
Although Kolo Muani’s arrival may not be enough to retain Mbappe in Paris, he appears to be an excellent fit for PSG. His versatility allows him to play centrally or in the left channel, and his creative abilities make him adaptable to the needs of his fellow forwards. In the Bundesliga last season, only Raphael Guerreiro provided more assists than Kolo Muani’s 11. Additionally, he scored 15 goals for an underperforming Frankfurt side, making him an appealing prospect for PSG, even in the absence of Mbappe.
Another advantage of signing Kolo Muani is his established presence in the French national team. PSG supporters have long called for a stronger French influence within the squad. While Kolo Muani may not possess the same star power as Mbappe, he would fulfill that desire – representing a French presence. The only remaining factor is meeting the German club’s surprisingly reasonable asking price, reportedly set at £80m ($103m) according to The Independent.
